MANILA, Philippines—The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is in urgent need of female nurses to fill up some 1,000 positions in its government hospitals, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administrator said.

In a statement sent to media outfits, POEA Administrator Jennifer Jardin-Manalili said qualified nurses may personally submit their documents, including a detailed resume with job description, school credentials, employment certificates, copy of passport, and two pieces of 2×2 recent photo at the Manpower Registry Division, Window M at the ground floor lobby of the POEA building on Ortigas Avenue corner Edsa in Mandaluyong City.

The Ministry of Health offers benefits that include annual paid vacation, free economy round trip ticket, housing and transportation allowance, and yearly renewal of contract.

Applicants should be licensed nurses with at least one year hospital experience, and should not be more than 45 years old.

Manalili added that the Saudi Ministry of Finance is also looking for three communication engineers, three architects, and three electrical engineers. Applicants must be male, not more than 50 years old, with 8 to 10 years work experience, and have valid licenses in their fields of work.

Benefits include housing and transportation allowance equivalent to 2 months salary, yearly renewal of contract, and free economy round trip ticket.

Applicants for engineer and architect positions have until June 26, 2009 to submit the same documents as the ones required of nurses to the POEA. [source]

A total of 78,574 nursing graduates are scheduled to take the board exam on June 6 and 7, as announced by nursing member Dean Marco Sto. Tomas.

He said that as part of their procedure to safeguard the integrity of the exams, board members will go on quarantine from May 27 to June 8.

According to Sto. Tomas, Manila has the biggest number of examinees at 42,338, followed by Baguio at 11,336, then Cebu at 6,948.

The rest of nursing board examinees are spread out to Davao, which has 4,069 examinees, Legaspi with 2,978, Lucena with 2,517, Cagayan De Oro with 2,313, Iloilo with 2,158, Tuguegarao with 1,314, Zamboanga with 1,375, Pagadian with 635, Tacloban with 458, and Jolo with 134.

I can still remember my sister payed around 6,000.00 pesos to the hospital just to get in and be trained. Isn’t that amazing, instead of the hospital paying you for your labor you pay them for working for them. There’s a word for that, EXPLOITATION.

Here’s the good new, A lawmaker is seeking to stop the practice of some hospitals from demanding nursing graduates pay for training to let them get the work experience necessary to qualify for jobs abroad. Laguna Rep. Edgar San Luis has filed a bill penalizing public and private hospitals that make the new nurses pay them, saying it was tantamount to exploitation.

No matter what hospital administrators call the pernicious practice—training, skills building, volunteer work or whatever—what they are doing is plain and simple exploitation

The Rep. San Luis proposis a fine of 100,000.00 pesos for hospitals and one year imprisonment for the administrator.  Here’s more the nurse who has been made to pay will be refunded in full plus 6 percent interest until the balance is paid in full.  In this bill also, the nurses will be paid not less than the minimum wage.  Here’s a side note, my sister who is now a full time nurse at the hospital she was trained, (thank goodness she was hired) makes six thousand pesos a month however if you work in a call center you make 400 to 600 pesos a day more or less 18,000.00 pesos a month.  There is fundamentally wrong in how we pay our workers.  How  is it that we pay less those workers (nurses) who are in the business of saving life.  I am not trying to belittle the workers in the call center but I think the work of the nurse is more critical that receiving calls from customers.  Here in the US the nurses are among the highest paid workers because there job involves life.  Let us go back to the issue.

I would urge all nurses, new grads and old, to call your representatives and tell them you support this bill and it must be pass.  This is the step on the right direction.  In my opinion the penalty is too small but it is better than nothing and by not paying alone to be trained is a big step forward. With the worldwide economic slowdown, many of the estimated 100,000 unemployed nurses in the country are finding it harder to get work abroad, with the processing of application papers to the United States now possibly taking up to three or four years, current and former officials of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) have said.

Former PNA national president Marilyn D. Yap said the global crisis was affecting the job prospects of nurses overseas, thus, the Department of Labor and Employment’s NARS (Nurses Assigned in Rural Areas) program was a big help to the nurses.

Yap said, however, that if only the government had the funds to maintain a 1 is to 5 or 1:10 nurse to patient ratio in local hospitals, all the unemployed nurses might find work.

“The doors to jobs in foreign lands were open before. What has happened because of the economic meltdown, the recession in the US, is a slowdown in the processing of papers,” Yap said in a recent interview.

“For the US, it now takes them (nurses) three to four years [to leave] unlike before when they could leave easily every year,” she said. [source]

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino migrant groups in New Zealand have launched online petitions calling on the Wellington government to review a new ruling that automatically denies registration to Filipino nurses who obtained their degrees in the Philippines in less than four years.

The petitions, launched by Philippine Nurses Speak Out! (PNSO), call on the Nursing Council of New Zealand to give Filipino nurses a fairer assessment, saying some of them graduate early because this is their second college course.

According to Ruby Lat of PNSO, Filipino “second courser” nurses include those who obtain degrees in Biology, Psychology, Dentistry, Medicine and other allied courses before taking up Nursing, thus they already had earned credits and are able to graduate in less than four years.

One petition (http://www.ipetitions.com/ petition/philnursespeakout) is for the affected nurses, while the other (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/supportphilnursespeakout/) is for supporters of their cause.

According to Philippine Ambassador Bienvenido Tejano, there are about 50 nurses overstaying in New Zealand after their applications were rejected.

The Nursing Council’s chief executive, Carolyn Reed, had expressed concern the rapid increase in the number of nursing programs in the Philippines may have compromised the quality of nursing graduates.

“We appeal for consideration, especially for the distressed and stranded Filipino second coursers in New Zealand,” said the first petition.

There are some 26,000 Filipinos living in New Zealand, of whom 500 are nurses.

The government has announced that starting this month, POEA will start sending nurses and caregivers to work in Japan. For the next two years, the Philippine government has estimated that 400 nurses and 600 caregivers will be deployed to Japan. This numbers is so meager but it is a good start. I would like to urge nurses to apply for this job. I know a lot of our kababayans asked me how to apply.
